Dungeons and Dragons was one of the first of a new breed of game known as a role playing game, or R.P.G. for short. The game takes the form of an interactive story. Each player is put in the position of acting out the role of a character. The Dungeon Master moderated the story and acted as the characters eyes and ears. The game incorporated aspects of simulation gaming to handle such events as encounters and combat outcomes. By the early 80s D&D was immensely popular. It spawned an advanced version of the game called Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, a saturday morning cartoon, as well as a series of toys. The toys were produced by LJN in 1983 and 1984. The series consisted of small and large action figures, articulated and rubber monsters, and playsets. Many of the figures used G.I. Joe type articulation at the hips and arms. |
