At that time they changed their name to Lego, which was a contraction of Leg Golt which is Danish for play well. The Lego blocks that we know so well were not invented by Lego at all. Rather they were created by British inventor Hilary Fisher Page in 1939. He created the Kiddicraft company to produce his new Self-Locking Building Bricks. The rights to the bricks were purchased by Lego in 1949. In the next decade Lego grew rapidly. More than 30 building and vehicle sets were released. They included windows, trees, road signs, and a cardboard play mat. The bricks were also improved by adding hollow tubes inside the bricks to help them adhere. It was not until 1974 that the Lego figures were released. |
