Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game Variags of Khand
To the east of Mordor lies the land of Khand.
In its plains are countless tribes of horsemen.
About the Army
The Variags of Khand army list is found in the Shadow in the East supplement.
It is currently the only army with chariots.
It also has plenty of mounted troops, and those with two-handed weapons.
It has many weaknesses including a low armor value.
As you might expect the Khandish King has the best fight value, defense, and courage in the Khandish force.
The high fight value is particularly important when using a two-handed weapon.
He also functions as a banner for all Khandish troops.
However, he is also more expensive than a Khandish Chieftain.
He does not seem to be worth the extra points.
Khandish Chieftain should be taken in every Khandish force.
They are used to win the first few combats, that are so crucial to the Khandish force.
If you lose these combats, and fall behind in the number of troops, you will quickly lose the battle.
I usually mount the Chieftain on a horse.
If I am facing cavalry I put him in a chariot.
I arm my Khandish Warriors with two-handed weapons, as I let the horsemen carry bows.
Khandish Horsemen are an important part of the army.
DO NOT TREAT THEM AS KNIGHTS.
They do not charge ahead of your force and bowl over the enemy.
Rather they snipe at enemy troops while your foot troops advance.
When your foot troops are in charge range, attack the enemy flank with your horsemen.
Any troops that are knocked down are easy pickings for the Khandish Warriors.
The Khandish Chariot is an anti-cavalry unit.
It can also be used to run around and shoot at troops.
Lastly, it has an enormous base and can be used to block passage for a turn.
It will of course be destroyed in such situations.
