Do you remember going to the Zoo and getting one of those wax animals from a vending machine? If you did, the experience is pretty hard to forget, however you may not remember that the machine was called Mold A Rama.
Mold A Rama were invented in 1962. They featured a large clear dome in which you could see your new toy being cast. The machines are found at various tourist locations such as the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. They are most common in Florida, where the company that makes Mold A Rama is based. They are also very common in Chicago, where they are featured at the Museum of Science and Industry, the Field Museum, and the Lincoln Park Zoo.
The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago features the robot, train, shuttle, and submarine pictured below. As of June 2007 they cost $1.50. The machines accept coins and dollar bills.
