The first View-Master was shown at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. Stereoscopic pictures had been around for more than fifty years. However, they had never been incorporated into such an elegant device. The original View-Master was in-fact very much like the modern ones. It has two eye pieces and looks roughly like a pair of binoculars. It can even use the modern reels. The greatest advance of the View-Master was to be able to tell a story with pictures. Each disc can hold seven pairs of photographs and accompanying text. In its heyday almost every tourist attraction, and cartoon had its own View-Master reels.
